Sound reflective roof and wall. What makes loud noises outside quiet on the inside?

We just got a call from a client who has had one of our metal roof systems for a few months now. This was her first Independence Day with her new metal roof. She is in an area of town with a particular proclivity toward fireworks and mentioned she always feels like she’s in a battle zone every year. She is sensitive to sound and so his her dog.

She mentioned how grateful she was because this year, the sounds from outside were cut by a large margin and she and her dog were able to better enjoy their evening.

Sound, like light, is reflective. Metal is among of the best reflectors of sound. Sound reflectivity means after colliding with a surface, most of the noise is reflected back towards the noise source and beyond. So if you have a metal roof, the sound waves hit the roof and bounce back which keeps much of the sound out of your house. Sound magic? Look it up! It’s real science.

There is no better roof type than metal to keep your home sound resistant from outside sources. Metal wall cladding and metal roofing, when properly planned, can make every difference in insulating your building from environmental noises.

Fireworks a few times a year aside, if you are located in an area with lightning storms or in a big city with lots of white noise, or out in the country where every noise is heightened, a metal roof and metal siding will dampen those sounds.

For those with PTSD, anxiety, children and babies, pets and those with other sound sensitivities, clad your building’s walls with metal and install a metal roof. It really, really helps.

Plus, if you’re worried about fire from fireworks, metal doesn’t catch on fire. And if you’re worried about lighting, even if the roof gets struck, it will insulate your home or building as a Faraday cage.

There are only positives with a metal roof and metal siding and cladding. If you want to learn the best way to cut down on noise from the outside from an architectural standpoint, give us a call and we’ll help you plan to make the loud noises outside soft on the inside.
