Bronze for architectural envelope applications

In 5000 BC, arsenic was traded for tin as an additive to copper to create a newer, stronger alloy with innumerable applications. Back then, roofs and walls were made of mud and straw, but the innovations made in that crucial period of time have led us to a path of glorious choices in our architectural designs which can last beautifully for many lifetimes.

You’ve seen us use brass for projects in the past. Brass is copper mixed with zinc, achieving a golden hue which softens over time. Though brass is a fairly unconventional roofing and cladding material, you’re more likely to see it in this architectural capacity more frequently than its counterpart, bronze. If you’re looking for a truly unique building material that offers permanence and maintenance-free features without coloring too far outside the lines, consider bronze for your next roofing or cladding project.

As mentioned, bronze is copper mixed with tin. Where other living metals could potentially be described as recalcitrant or garish when initially installed, bronze has a much more restrained, collegial look fresh from the starting gate. It will patinate and evolve in appearance for roof and wall applications just as it will for sculptures.

Bronze can be ordered in a number of finishes which range from a riff off of a theme, to exotic jewel tones. Here you can see a couple of options of traditional, factory-produced and ready to install, rich bronze colors from which to choose.

One of the great reasons to work with our team, is we can provide virtually any system, accessory or design you need for your bronze building envelope applications.

Use of a special metal often requires special usage. We can create perforated panels for rainscreen or decorative applications.

Bronze has its own epoch lasting thousands of years with well-preserved remnants displayed in museums. When this remarkable material is combined with modern developments like our highly engineered systems, it certainly deserves a place in both contemporary and historic restoration / reconstruction builds. You can plan on living elegance and immutability when you specify bronze for your next project.
