Metal roofs and snow shedding

When architects mention they are reticent to spec metal roofs in heavy snow areas because they are notorious for shedding, we understand where they are coming from. Without a comprehensive solution and proper planning, you can be assured they will shed. The choices generally presented to them are fairly abysmal. Those brave souls willing to try are most often met with tragedy because companies peddling snow solutions overestimate their capabilities–those of the systems AND their knowledge.

What if we told you that metal roofs, properly planned and engineered, can last 1,000+ years or more maintenance-free in even the heaviest snow load areas? What if we told you there is no better solution in a heavy snow load area than a metal roof? It’s true! Promise!

In mountain regions or other heavy snow load areas, you can’t just cross your fingers and hope for the best. And if you are hearing you can’t have gutters because they’ll just rip off, or that the only way to avoid ice damming is with heat tape, these statements are simply and grossly mistaken.

We can stand in and walk around in our gutters. You?

There’s more to discuss than we have room here, and each project’s needs vary, but let’s start with some basics:

Proper insulation along with cold roofs and rainscreens will offer unparalleled protection against ice damming. There’s a lot of theory involved in designing these things, so if for any reason you are not sure, please allow us to help you plan.

The proper roof system is also imperative. Make certain to choose something strong and lasting like those we offer.

Beware of imposters.

Don’t let this happen to you. Use our metal roof systems and plan and install with confidence!

Make sure the details are tight. Don’t let anyone try to sell you on caulk or roof penetrations or roof soldering or anything that won’t hold up. You are planning with a premium material. Honor the investment and do all the little things the right way.

Implement a quality snow abatement system. If the system causes a penetration, requires adhesive, or pinches or mars the surface in any way, it’s not a real system. How confident are we in our systems? We use the snow hooks as climbing access and hook our safety harnesses into the snow fence systems. We trust our lives with them! These are the very same systems used by the Germans in the high Alps where the snow loads and extreme weather out-extremes most places on the globe. They are TÜV certified and the best in the world!

How strong are our snow guards? Your roof system had better be a quality one! If it isn’t, the snow guards will hold back so much snow, your roof will tear off!

Snow guard planning is a science. You need to factor in location, direction facing, snow loads and a long list of items. You can’t just apply a snow fence around the perimeter of the building and expect that to do. We’ll need to calculate location and quantity and type.

Yes, there is a lot that goes into a properly planned metal roof in a heavy snow load area, but don’t let that keep you from moving ahead in a better way. Building a beautiful, efficient building is always going to be more involved than just putting up a tent. We know it is uncomfortable trying something new, especially if you’ve used something in the past and it hasn’t worked. We can guarantee that if you plan using our systems and methods, you will get the successful outcome you desire. Just because everyone else is doing the same things over and over expecting a different result, doesn’t mean you have to join them on the crazy train.

It’s a bold statement, but we can guarantee permanent, beautiful, efficient, maintenance-free results for the life of the selected material. If you choose something like stainless steel, that could be a thousand years! Imagine NEVER having to worry about your designs, your installation work or your building! Imagine the energy savings! Imagine taking that winter vacation and not needing someone to babysit your house every second! Imagine the peace of mind knowing that you’ll never have to worry about snow slides!

We challenge everyone in the design-build community to build like the Germans. Especially if your building is in a heavy snow load area, let us help you achieve the results you demand.
