Old World Craft, Modern Roofs: Historic Restoration Zinc Work at Schloss Drachenburg

High above the Rhine near Bonn, Germany, Schloss Drachenburg is one of the most photographed castles in Europe. Built between 1882 and 1884, it fell into serious decline in the twentieth century before a long restoration brought it back. Today it is a public museum and a landmark of German historicist architecture.

Our Meister was part of that restoration, carrying out architectural zinc work on the castle’s roofs.

Why historic roofs demand a different skill set

A roof like Drachenburg’s is no ordinary job. Turrets, spires, a dome, steep slate fields, ornamental cresting and finials all meet at transitions that have to shed water for generations. Restoration work also has to respect the original design while performing to modern standards. Every gutter, flashing and valley is custom, fitted by hand.

This is the work the German Spenglermeister tradition was built for. A Spengler is a master of architectural sheet metal, trained to form copper, zinc and other metals into roofing and ornament that lasts for centuries.

Bringing that tradition to American projects

Spengler Industries carries the same training and standards to projects across the United States from our shop in Salt Lake City. Our historic restoration and architectural sheet metal services include:

  • Standing seam and custom zinc roofing
  • Copper roofing, gutters and ornamental work
  • Turret, dome and complex-curve roofing
  • Custom flashing, cresting and finials
  • Restoration of historic metal roof details

Whether you are restoring a landmark, preserving a historic home, or designing a new building with old-world character, we build roofs meant to outlast the people who commission them.
